Why The Old Liquor Store serves York's best Sunday roast
Sunday roasts are not in short supply in York. But there is only one Sunday roast served in a Grade II listed former chocolate factory, with wine pairings for every dish, aperitifs on a champagne terrace and a kitchen that genuinely cares about every element of the plate. Here is what makes ours different:
The roasts. We source our beef from Yorkshire, our gammon is marmalade and clove glazed with a big apple cider and onion gravy, and our chicken breast is tarragon buttered with a caramelised onion and fennel seed stuffing. These are not standard pub roast dishes — they are properly developed, chef-led recipes that happen to be served on a Sunday.
The trimmings. Every roast comes with garlic and rosemary roasted potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, baked cauliflower and Isle of Mull cheddar gratin, maple glazed roots and buttered greens. The cauliflower gratin alone is worth coming for.
The upgrades. Add a braised short rib and bone marrow croquette to the beef for £4. Add a malt glazed sticky pigs cheek to the gammon for £4. These are the kind of thoughtful extras that turn a great roast into an exceptional one.
The wine pairings. Every roast has a suggested wine pairing — Amarone from Masi alongside the Yorkshire beef, a Maranges Vieilles Vignes Burgundy with the gammon, Sancerre Blanc with the chicken. You don’t have to take them but they are there, and they are excellent.
The setting. The former Terry’s Chocolate Factory on Bishopthorpe Road is one of the most dramatic and memorable dining settings in York. Sunday lunch here feels genuinely special — not like a meal you could have anywhere.
The puddings. Limoncello meringue posset with cassis and berry compote, salted almond and heather honey Hobnobs. Terry’s Chocolate Orange sundae with brownie, shards and chocolate sauce. A three cheese selection with grapes, biscuits and cherry vine tomato and basil chutney. Dessert here is not an afterthought.
